How To Know When AC is Broken? 5 Tips

compressor fix main

Is the temperature in your getting hotter and hotter every other minute, even when your AC is running at full capacity? If that’s the case, it’s a clear indication that your air conditioner is broken. If your AC is broken, it can struggle to lower the temperatures in your home or start blowing off warm air.

In case you notice some of these signs, it’s time to schedule an AC repair immediately with a professional AC technician. Typically, AC technicians have the experience and skills to diagnose and repair a broken air conditioner, thus helping to make your home comfortable again.

However, warm temperatures in your home are not the only sign that your air conditioner is broken. Other signs can indicate that your AC is broken, even when it’s supplying your home with conditioned air. With that said, the following are the top 5 signs that indicate your air conditioner is malfunctioning

Insufficient airflow

Now, when you notice that your home is warmer than it should be, and yet your air conditioner is on, place your hand on the vents of the indoor unit. If you notice that there’s hot air blowing from the vent, that is a good sign. However, if you notice that not much air is blowing out the vents, it’s a sign that your AC is malfunctioning.

If your air conditioner is in good condition, you should feel a consistent airflow coming out of the vents. The flow should be strong enough that you can feel it with your hand from a distance of 8 – 15 inches. So, if you realize that the airflow from your vents is a bit weaker than normal, there’s a chance your AC is not functioning properly.

In most cases, your AC might be having a dirty air filter, which needs cleaning or replacement. A clogged air filter can limit how air flows from your system. In other cases, insufficient airflow can be a result of a faulty blower motor or fan control board. Regardless of what’s causing this problem, you have a broken air conditioner that needs to be repaired.

Unusual smells

If you notice unusual smells in your home, and the source of this smell is your air conditioner, this shows there is a problem. And, you need to deal with this problem before it becomes serious. Professional HVAC technicians can do a quick diagnostic to check whether your AC requires a complete cleaning, tune-up, or an advanced maintenance solution.

UV (ultraviolet) lamps work wonders when it comes to eliminating stubborn microbial grown in an AC unit. Also, duct cleaning can help to deal with the issue of bad smells that might have accumulated in the ducts.

Your AC is making abnormal noises

If you have a newly installed AC unit in your home, you’ll notice that it makes gentle noises when a cycle is running. This is normal, and it shouldn’t worry you. In fact, this noise shouldn’t bother you after running your AC for a few months.

However, when you start to hear weird noises coming from your unit, it’s an indication that the fan is malfunctioning or damaged, one of the internal components has become loose, your ductwork is not properly fixed, or the AC’s internal mechanism is blocked. Now, if the noises start to get louder, your outdoor unit might have come to the end of its lifespan or it might be corroded. That means you need to schedule a professional repair with an AC technician to assess your unit and determine whether it needs replacement or repair.

High humidity levels in your home

The spring and summer seasons have one thing in common—sticky outdoor weather. However, this doesn’t mean your home should have high humidity levels. Apart from cooling your home, air conditioners are also supposed to regulate the humidity levels in your home. So, if you realize that your air conditioner cannot regulate the humidity levels and keep them at the desired point, there’s a chance that it has broken down.

When you hire an AC technician to inspect your unit, you might realize that it needs a quick re-calibration of the problem. However, you might also need to invest in a dehumidifier if your AC cannot keep the indoor humidity levels down.

Spiking energy bills

Now, maybe you’ve spent a lot of money on AC repairs, but you notice that your energy bills keep on increasing when you use your air conditioner. In case you notice an unexpected surge in energy bills during the summer season, your air conditioner might be the culprit.

Modern AC units are designed to be energy efficient. Therefore, if your unit is consuming more energy than it’s supposed to, you should contact an AC technician to check the source of the problem.

Moisture and leaks around your unit

If you notice signs of moisture and leaks in some areas of your air conditioning system, this can be a sign of a severe AC failure. The AC replacement technicians from Hartman say that most leaks are a result of a broken drain or refrigerant tube. While most people are tempted to ignore these leaks, they can lead to mold and fungus growth, which can lead to serious health issues in the future. Therefore, if you notice any of these signs, consider having an expert fix your system.
