The Correct Sequence for a Skincare Routine

Skincare is an important activity that everyone should do. However, some people think it’s just something invented by fancy people, and it’s not necessary. They think it’s a waste of money. This thinking’s common reason is that they think applying different kinds of products to your skin would make it worse than better. Well, they’re not entirely wrong. The phrase “less is more” is still applicable to skincare. However, too little is also not good.

A skincare routine is done first thing in the morning or after a shower and the last thing before you go to bed. Some people suffer from blemish problems like acne, blackheads, whiteheads, and skin discolourations, so they need to have blemish skincare suitable for their skin type. The correct sequence of product application is very important in skincare. You can’t put on sunscreen first, then wash your face with a cleanser.

How to correctly apply and layer your skincare products

Step 1: Cleanse

Every skincare routine starts with cleansing. A splash of water on your face is a great way to start your day. Always choose a mild cleanser that isn’t harsh on the skin and would only gently cleanse your skin. Some people like being extra fancy by using tools to cleanse their faces, like an electric brush, but it doesn’t matter if you use a device or not. Your hands are more than enough as long they’re clean.

Step 2: Tone

Toners are usually skipped and deemed unnecessary because most of them contain alcohol that harshly irritates the skin. This step is still optional, though, depending on your skin type. But it can still be very helpful for some people. Toners also have various types and purposes. So, choose a toner that would target your specific skin problems.

Step 3: Serum

Like toners, serums are highly-concentrated and dense treatments that address specific skincare concerns. They contain powerful ingredients that are very useful for blemish skincare. Again, choose the best serum variant that you think is the most applicable to your skin concern.

Step 4: Spot Treatment

Now, it gets even narrower and more specific. From the term itself, spot treatment products are only used for those affected areas of the skin – acne spots, for example. These products have specific roles on the skin. Spot treatments are usually applied to acne, and these products claim to have an immediate effect on acne.

Step 5: Moisturize

A common misconception about moisturisers is that it is not good for oily skin, but all skin types need a moisturiser to keep the skin hydrated. If you’ve applied spot treatment, avoid applying moisturisers on these spots.

Step 7: Sunscreen

Last but not least, apply sunscreen. Never, ever forget to apply sunscreen. Physical sunscreens are usually more recommended than chemical sunscreens because chemical sunscreens might react with the previous products you’ve used, making them useless. Unlike chemical sunscreens, the skin does not have to absorb physical sunscreens. They only stay on the top layer of the skin and do their job by blocking UV rays. Most skin problems are caused by too much exposure to the sun. Thus, it is very important to use sunscreen.

A skincare routine must have the following steps in the correct order: cleanse, tone, serum, spot treatment, moisture, and sunscreen. You must do skincare not because you only want to hop into the trend but because your skin needs it.
