How to Start Running: 7 Things You Need to Know

Running is one of the best ways to get your heart pumping and healthy. The greatest thing about it is that you don’t need much space to get started. Even if you live in a small apartment, you can follow a running plan. There are many ways to start running, whether you’re new to the activity or have been planning to get started for a while. Here are a few things you need to know before you start running.

1. Allow Yourself Time to Get Ready

You’ll need time to get prepared for the activity. Set aside time in your schedule to ensure that you have a good night’s rest and eat a proper meal before running. Also, make sure that you wear the proper attire for your run and try on any running gear you may need before starting. For most beginners, this will mean wearing a pair of shoes appropriate for running and some running shorts or tights. You may also want to bring along some water so that you stay hydrated.

2. Plan A Route before Starting On Your Run

Most people like running in the neighbourhood near their home or work, but some prefer different routes to explore new places as they go on their runs. Choose a route that appeals to you, and map it out beforehand so that when it comes time for your run, all the terrain will be familiar territory. With a mapped-out route, you will not make any unexpected turns along the way. If possible, start by walking through where you plan on running once before going out jogging so that it’s more familiar to you and you’re not nervous.

3. Start Slow and Work Your Way Up

Don’t go running by yourself, but start easy. Go out for your run on or near an empty street so that there is less traffic on it than usual. There, you can jog at a slow pace for a few minutes to warm up and see how it feels. You can then pick up speed by walking faster until you achieve a comfortable running pace. You can graduate to holding your phone in one hand while holding onto the other arm of your running partner (if any) to hold them while making the transition from walking to jogging easier for both of you.

4. Get a Consistent Running Partner

Some people thrive when they run alone, but it’s more beneficial to have a running buddy who participates in the same workouts as you. This can be a fellow runner from your local running club or someone you meet up with weekly for runs. The benefits are two-fold for them; since you’re both doing the same workouts, it keeps your workout fresh and exciting, and they can get a good workout in while you’re doing it (and vice versa). You can also push each other to go over their limits. It’s a win-win situation for everyone.

5. Use Running Stairs

You can get a great run in no matter where you are by simply heading outside and jogging outside your house for a few minutes. Some folks use a treadmill, while others prefer running on the stairs at home. They give you some great strength training and cardio activity, plus the added benefit of venting your steam when you finish.

6. Invest In the Right Running Gear

If you’re going to go all out with running, you’ll need the right gear. In your quest to get the best workout ever, you should invest in a good pair of running shoes or sneakers and a couple of pairs of compression socks. The right compression socks are designed to reduce muscle soreness after exercise so you can train more intensely than normal. It’s important to wear these for every workout, especially if your research has shown that improper footwear can increase injury risk.

7. Make Running Fun

If you’re going to be doing lots of running outside, it’s important to have a good time. That’s why some runners like to play music when they run. Running is something you can do just to bum around in your neighbourhood or by yourself. But if you want to make it more fun, try downloading a running app and track every step you take. Once you get the hang of logging your days’ activities, it will be easier and more engaging.
